About the location (Machrihanish, Campbeltown)
Kintyre is a remote, beautiful but easily accessible peninsula. Surrounded on three sides by ocean the variety of shoreline and countryside is endless. The west coast with its beautiful sunsets and views to the western isles is wild with long sandy beaches dotted with rocky outcrops providing the many seal colonies in the area with basking platforms. Machrihanish beach is an award winner from the Keep Scotland Beautiful campaign. The stretch from Machrihanish to Westport is a beautiful 3 miles of sandy beach walking strung with dunes for enjoying a picnic in. Statistically Kintyre enjoys the driest weather on the west coast.
The east coast is more sheltered and therefore greener giving shelter to different sorts of wildlife. The Oak Woods near Skipness and the ancient castle there are part of the ancient landscape of Kintyre.
Inland walking leads to discoveries of abandoned villages, lime kilns and bridges and old drovers roads revealing a sense of the history of the people who once lived there,
Strong farming traditions sustain the rich lands of the area providing the local creamery with the milk to make the well-known Campbeltown Cheddar Cheese and Upper Ballywilline and Ifferdale farms sell their own meat direct. The Kintyre Larder in Main Street sells a wide range of local produce.
The cottage is a 10 minute walk to Machrihanish Golf Course, voted 57th in the top 100 golf clubs of the world, and a short drive to Machrihanish Dunes Course.
