Forming the outskirts of Edinburgh city before the road meanders south-east to Musselburgh, Portobello has long been a major attraction for locals from all over the city, due to its much-loved beach, attractive promenade, and wealth of cafes, shops and bars. The area has something of a small town feel, and an independent air. The beach itself is worth travelling to see, though to be warned- the water is very cold!
