A large and elegant country house set amidst hundreds of acres of farmland on the edge of the beautiful and historic village of Falkland in Fife. The house was built as a manse in 1806 for the Rev. George Buist, and designed by a famous architect, Thomas Barclay. This Georgian home was formerly home to Frances Shand Kydd, and has been visited by Diana, Princess of Wales, and her sons, the Princes William and Harry.
Falkland is in Central Fife, within 40 minutes of Edinburgh, St Andrews, Perth and Dundee, and within 30 miles of more than 50 golf courses. The nearest railway station is at Markinch, only 7 minutes away, and Dundee and Edinburgh airports are within 40 minutes drive.
Buses run to Falkland, and the nearest bus stop is 5 minutes walk away.
Ideal for large families and groups, the house sleeps up to 12 adults and 2 children in 6 bedrooms; there are 3 en-suite rooms, and 2 family bathrooms, and a downstairs loo. There is a dining kitchen with AGA, a light and airy conservatory, a comfortable Drawing Room with dual aspect and open fire, a tv room, and a Dining Room to seat 14.
There is plenty of outdoor space, with a sunny terrace, south and west facing, an acre of walled garden with trampoline and swings for the kids. We have a hot-tub hirer locally and we can arrange a hot tub for the duration of your stay. Please let us have your requirements and we will provide a quote.
The house is available by the week, or by 3 or 4 day lets. We still have some availability for October half term breaks, please enquire.

The house features fabulous public rooms, comprising: A light and well-equipped kitchen/diner, a spacious 'P' shaped conservatory with views over the village, double glazed and warm whatever the weather, a stunning Drawing Room with dual aspect and open fire. The room is furnished with antiques, and has comfortable sofas for chilled evenings. The dining room seats 14 and is elegant and spacious with two windows to the front. There is a tv room with flatscreen tv and dvds, and internet router.
The kitchen is well-equipped with all that you require, an AGA and electric hob for cooking, a microwave, toaster (and AGA toaster, great for toasties)! Fridge/freezer and integrated fridge, dishwasher etc. There is a washing machine and a drying room, suitable for wellies, coats and wet gear. Next to the kitchen is a wc with whb.
The light and airy conservatory is large, and is west facing. Warm even on a cold day, and suitable for breakfasts or tea, complete with easy chairs for lounging in the warmth.
Double doors lead to the Drawing Room. A typical grand Georgian room with dual aspect and an open-fire. Coal, kindling, and firelighters are supplied for the duration of your stay, and extra if required available. If you wish to burn logs, then these can be supplied at cost. The room has sumptuous sofas, easy chairs and is warm and comfortable.
The dining room has a large table and seats 14, is elegant and spacious for a formal evening or lunchtime meal. 2 large windows look out over north Fife.
The master bedroom being a large double with king bed, and a large en-suite with walk in shower and roll-top bath.
The second double bedroom is south facing with a yellow theme. It has a king bed and ensuite shower, wc and whb.
the first twin room features stunning views and twin beds. It has an en-suite shower room with shower, wc and whb.
The second twin room is large and bright, also south-facing, and has a family bathroom with roll-top bath, wc and whb next to it.
A further 2 bedrooms are on the second floor. Both are large and airy, and share a family bathroom with bath, wc and whb.
All rooms are beautifully furnished with antiques or contemporary furnishings, Sealy Posturepedic beds, electric blankets and down duvets and pillows.
About the location (Falkland, Fife)
Falkland is an historic small town, famous for Falkland Palace and 30 buildings of architectural interest. Narrow cobbled streets and crow-stepped gables abound, and it has 3 tea-rooms, 3 pubs, and a small hotel (all serving lunches, afternoon teas and dinners). There are several lovely craft shops, a post office/general store, a bank, a hairdresser and all that you will need nearby. We are 10 minutes from Glenrothes and Cupar for bigger shops, and suggest that you order your supplies from Asda or Tesco for delivery on the afternoon of your arrival.
We are ideally located in Central Fife, within 40 minutes of Edinburgh, St Andrews, Perth, and Dundee, and within 90 minutes of a third of Scotland. A perfect base for exploring, shopping, beaches, castles and of-course Golf! There are 50 golf-courses within 30 miles, with Falkland 10 minutes walk away, and Ladybank (an Open Qualifying Course) 10 minutes in the car. Gleneagles, the venue for the 2014 Ryder Cup is only 28 miles away.
We are at the base of The Lomond Hills, and perfectly placed for walking. At the edge of the village lies Falkland Estate with miles of smooth tracks suitable for a walk or cycle. Falkland lies on the main cycle routes from Edinburgh and the south to Aberdeen and the north.
There are beaches within 30 minutes, the best at Aberdour, Leven, Largo, Elie, and St Andrews.
Deposit: After payment of the 10% initial instalment, In order to reserve the accommodation for you, we require debit/credit card details. A further instalment of 50% of the remaining balance will be charged to your account, with the remainder being charged on arrival. We will take a 'good housekeeping' deposit of £250 which will be returned at the end of your stay with deductions made for damage if applicable.
Cancellations: Cancellations made more than 60 days in advance of arrival. Any funds paid to date will be retained but no further charges will be made.
Cancellations of less than 60 days will result in the full cost of the stay becoming due. We will attempt to re-let the house and if we are successful then we will refund all or part of the balance of your stay, less an administration fee of £100.
If you are concerned about the possibility of cancelling your booking, please check your Travel Insurance.

Pets: We welcome well-behaved pets, but please discuss your requirements with us. We reserve the right to charge for extra cleaning if it is required.
